Proposed Discussion Points for Your Neighborhood Dinner

A request from the Emergency Prep Committee

As host family for this month’s neighborhood dinner we request that you engage in brief conversation about Emergency Preparedness (like even just 3 minutes!!). Choose one or two items below to discuss with your guests. You can also invite one of your guests to lead the conversation.

Just a few minutes of discussion may save a life! Thank you.

  1. The Four-Minute Drill: If you had to evacuate the home in four minutes and could only grab what’s within reach between your bed and the front door, what would those items be? (Don’t forget the shoes that will save your feet from broken glass!)
  2. The Communication Challenge: In a major emergency, cell towers and internet often go down first. If you couldn’t call or text your family for 24 hours, do you have a pre-arranged “rally point” or backup form of communication?
  3. The “Everyday Carry” Audit: What is one item you carry in your bag or keep in your car every day that could actually be useful in an emergency? (e.g., a portable charger, a physical map, a multi-tool, or even just a bottle of water, medication.)
  4. Food Storage Inventory: How many people in your household could you feed for the first two weeks of a disaster using palatable, ready-to-eat food (not white-bucket or dry goods)? How many people will you provide for during a 6‑month personal or widespread crisis? How does your inventory match up?
  5. The “Power Outage” Plan: We take electricity for granted until it’s gone for three days. What is the one thing you’d miss most that isn’t a phone or light source? (e.g., a CPAP machine, an electric stove, or temperature control). Do you have a manual backup for it?
